AD Converion

As you may know, CLA-OIT has recently begun transitioning the entire College of Liberal Arts from CLA's Novell system of server-based storage and file sharing to the University's Active Directory system. This new system provides better data security and improved methods forsafe-guarding your documents.

Due to the size and complexity of our department, our transition to Active Directory will occur on three consecutive dates: May 19, 20 and 21, 2008.

Attached is a specific schedule for the conversion process. Please note when - the 19th, 20th or 21st - your machine will be converted to AD. We can make adjustments if necessary.

Here is the basic information regarding the transition to Active Directory:

1) Access to the old Novell system will be turned off at 4pm on Sunday, May 18 to enable the transfer of data to the new Active Directory system. Note: This does NOT affect e-mail access from home or other computers.

If you have the Novell Client installed, you will need to log in to "Workstation Only" after 4 on Sunday. This means you can get into your computer, but not networked drives. You will only need to do this until your computer is converted.

2) Chris Neville, Carla Bates, Esther Steenlage, Tony Odufuye and CLA-OIT technicians will convert individual desktops and laptops beginning at 8:30AM each morning. Conversion of each computer takes approximately one hour, and you do not need to be present during the process.

3) If you have a CLA owned laptop or desktop at home, please contact Chris and/or Carla to arrange for its conversion.

4) GRADUATE STUDENTS: if you have any data stored on the local drives of any department computer you will need to make sure you back it up to your Novell Home share prior to the conversion date. Everything in people's current Home Directories will be transferred.

5) The logon process may change for you following the conversion. Please follow the instructions that will be provided at your desktop following your computer's conversion.

6) As of now, the following areas of Psychology will not be included in this conversion: the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research, the Patrick lab, the Krueger lab, the Luciana Lab, and the computers in Elliott 150 and 160. In addition, computers not listed on the attached sheet will also not be included.

7) If a faculty member wants their lab to be put on AD and they were not on Novell, please contact Carla or Chris and we can arrange for this.

8) If you do not see your computer on the list, please send an email telling us to add you to the list - identifying user name, room number, and computer description (if more than one int he room).

CLA-OIT is committed to making this transition successful and to resolving any issues that might arise in a timely and effective manner. Several technicians, including Chris and Carla will be present in the department on the day after your computer is converted to assist with any issues that may arise.
